Learning to Read...Reading to Learn
"Teaching students to read by the end of 3rd grade is the single most important task assigned to elementary schools. (American Federation of Teachers)
Students
who do not 'learn to read' during the first three years of school experience
enormous difficulty when they are later asked to 'read to learn.'"
Statistically, more American children suffer long-term life-harm from the process of learning to read then from parental abuse, accidents, and all other childhood diseases and disorders combined.
In
purely economic terms, reading related difficulties cost our nation more than
the war on terrorism, crime, and drugs combined."
